Abortion Pill Approved
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved for sale a second generic version of the abortion pill Mifepristone. The approval is roiling pro-life lawmakers and advocates, as it comes shortly after a promise from U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and FDA Commissioner Marty Makary to investigate the safety of the drug. The White House said the approval should not be seen as an endorsement of Mifepristone.
Analysis and eternal perspective: The nomination of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. to the post of HHS Secretary attracted a lot of attention, as well as both support and opposition from both sides of the political aisle. Because his confirmation only required the votes of Republican Senators, much of his confirmation process focused on vaccines and abortion (the majority of federal programs involving abortion are managed by HHS).
On vaccines, Kennedy was mostly—though not unanimously—lauded for desiring to roll back federal mandates on vaccines.
On abortion, Kennedy mostly responded to concerns about his pro-choice position with a promise that he would support the President’s position on the issue.
The approval of another generic abortion pill certainly raises a political and policy question, and time will tell if the outcry from pro-life advocates will generate a change in the policy. It also serves, however, as a reminder for each of us to consider how we are seeking out ways to be the hands and feet of Jesus to those in vulnerable situations.
How are you intentionally choosing proximity to the widow and the orphan, and what is one tangible way you can do so this week? Every life is precious to God and is fearfully and wonderfully formed by Him (Ps. 139:14), and you are tasked with being a tangible support to the fatherless (Jam. 1:27).
There are countless ways to begin, the best of which is to look around your community and your church to identify specific needs. If you look, you will find them. Another option to consider is A Fearless Life, which we offer as a way to connect willing adoptive families with funding to adopt from foster care.
But let this story be a reminder to choose something. You are the plan God made for addressing this need, and there is great joy and purpose is answering that call!
