Precious Metals Soaring

The spot price for both gold and silver is at an all-time high after both precious metals rode a wave upward throughout 2025. The price for one ounce of gold on New Years Day 2025 was around $2,600 and now stands at more than $4,500, while silver has risen from around $29 per ounce to more than $70. While the price of both metals has historically increased fairly steadily, the dramatic rise over the last twelve months is by far the most sustained surge experienced by the metals in the twenty-first century.

Analysis and eternal perspective: Economic observers have a variety of opinions on the leading factors driving the rally of precious metals, but most agree that global uncertainty, reduced interest rates, and declining confidence in fiat currencies—including the U.S. dollar—are among the most significant factors. Where spot prices go from here is a perilous guessing game, but many interested parties are carefully watching the news about who will replace Jerome Powell as Chair of the Federal Reserve for a clue about the near-term monetary policy of the U.S.

As a Jesus follower, your posture toward money, wealth, and material possessions is one of the most important factors in your aim for a vibrant walk with Jesus. That statement might seem a little jarring, but God’s Word repeatedly returns to money matters to determine the health of your heart.

If we are honest with ourselves, we know this instinctively. I have an instinctive—and insatiable, if left to my own accord—inclination to obsess about material security. Sometimes it is a craving for wealth, but more consistently it is a certain desperation for comfort and security. It dresses up as duty and responsibility to provide for my family (a biblical duty expressed in 1 Tim. 5:8), but in reality, it stems from a dependence on myself over a confidence that God will provide all we need.

Friends, the totality of scripture acknowledges this is a difficult thing to conquer, so do not despair if you, like me, find this challenging. It will likely remain challenging until heaven, but as shiny trinkets of metal soar in value, and as you responsibly steward the physical wellbeing of those in your charge, remember where your true treasure lies. Everything of this Earth will pass away, but the treasure you lay up in heaven will forever remain (Matt. 6:19-21).
